Happy Birthday Monica Taylor Horgan (Voice actress for Mary/Maria in SH2)

Here is the one image of the painting I did based on the HD Collection coming out on March 6th!! Completely excited for it!! This is my first silent hill painting and really my first detailed one. Let me know what you guys think.

Video games don’t pay residuals. Even the biggest games of all time did not pay them. I think that’s something that needs an overhaul for sure…for a game to make hundreds of millions of dollars and for the people who helped make the game what it is to be paid as little as they are is something that could use a change. But that all aside, so few games actually DO make that kind of money so it’s a tough one to regulate. It’s something that would benefit from percentages (back-end deals)…like movies sometimes pay. But then it’s the risk of “will this game even be a success?” I have said it before; I was paid very well a long time ago for SH2…I was really happy with my compensation when we made the game.

It’s important to understand the distinction between Konami US (who are re-releasing SH2 in HD) and Konami (who made the game and by whom I was hired). The guys at Konami US who are involved now didn’t even work for Konami back when the game was made. There was definitely some miscommunication between agents, Team Silent, Konami and the voice actors. But there isn’t some master plot to screw people out of anything.

[[ My Secret Santa recipient was… MIRA THE DOG.

I-I really hope you like your presents, Mira… ;///; If not, I’ll gladly redo them.

She requested a picture of Mary and Maria seeing each other through a mirror/glass of some sort, and a picture of James in the “WHY CAN’T I HOLD ALL THESE” meme, holding pillows. So… h-here you go, Mira. ; w; ]]

Well guys, funny thing all this support from you all. Have been asked to audition for a new Marvel X-Men game…submitting that in the morning. Will read for a few parts including Jean Grey, Lady Deathstrike, and Rogue. Wish me luck! I wouldn’t be doing this without you guys.

I’m here and waiting for you by ~hideko69

Maria from Silent Hill 2.

I really enjoy much more drawing by hand…

Linework done in pencil, color in Photoshop.

I am trying to get used to digital work but… I always end up without the “digital” finish, always looking for more traditional finish! Oh how I love wet brushes)

Print available per request.

Public Statement from Monica Taylor Horgan:

“Guys I loathe to chime in on all this business but in the interest in keeping the fragile progress we have made I would like to. It is my belief that the GOAL here is to get you guys the original voices on the game that you love. I wanted more information at the onset of all this and I went out and got it…from professionals who understand the talent business. At the time the game was made and released, I was considered a “professional” actor. I was on TV, on the radio, in games (many) and I had done work in the US and abroad (namely Japan). My voice has been used hundreds and hundreds of times. Here is what I DO know about royalties and residuals. Not once have I ever been paid any residuals for video games (or any voice work for that matter). And since the new HD game is now Konami US property, it is important to realize how it works in the US. I now live in LA and I have spoken (due to all this “controversy”) with 2 BIG agents (who specialize in video games) and the bottom line is that GAMES do NOT receive residuals. To quote a VIDEO GAME TALENT REP (agent): “IT IS NOT DONE.” Even famous, big-name Hollywood actors are paid once—no “back-end” deals. That aside, and to lend credit to claims that residuals have been earned for some people; Japan is like “The Old West” and deals can be made between agents, talent and companies that are off the grid and often are. Pay scales were radically different for different talent, there is NO UNION in Japan for VAs (called narrators there). If you had a smart, fast-thinking agent, you could have been paid more, or over time potentially. NO ONE knew SH2 would go on to its success. It is SO common to have something get big and then have all this squabbling about credit, compensation, motives, etc. But PLEASE…this whole business about discussing getting paid is putting a SERIOUSLY bad taste in my mouth.

Here it is folks: I would LOVE to have the old voices on SH2 as an option for fans. I will be at Konami to sign off on this as a reality tomorrow. My experience with them thus far has been totally relaxed, pleasant and light-hearted. And I am sure if I suggested “pizza and beer” they would be game for that too. I realize I am just one voice: but It was my understanding that this is what the fans would like so let’s make it happen!”

Maria was easier for me. She’s such a vamp and that’s a lot of fun to play. Mary was so much harder. She had a fragility I don’t really have outwardly. I had just moved from Japan and was really emotional about leaving. I flew back from London (where we moved) and I was doing the last day of the job and the last job of my full time residence there. I also lost my mom young and I used a lot of that feeling of regret. The combo was a very emotional one!

Hi everyone…I have a favor to ask….can everyone recommend me as a friend to all their SH fan friends? I think I have an idea to help keep the original voices intact but I need a lot of fan support…THANK YOU !!! http://www.facebook.com/marymariaoriginal

Mary was very fragile…needy…bit of a martyr. Maria was all prowess and manipulation—I suppose I drew from bits of both from my own life. Silent Hill was a real passion for the makers…everyone was very committed. I think the makers really knew they had something intense and unique there. I learned that you NEVER know where good material can come from…my experience with video games before had been really superficial voiceovers from Japanese to English…this was special.
